My name is Nick Hlozek and I’m a print and digital designer from Pretoria, South Africa. I am a dedicated, deadline-driven communication designer and educator, with almost a decade of industry experience. I completed a four-year BA(Information Design) degree at the University of Pretoria, and have worked on a number of visual communication campaigns for a wide variety of clients. In 2009, I decided to start working for myself, which is how designlogik came into being. My clients include the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime, the Centre for the Study of AIDS, as well as frogdesign.

In addition to running my own communication design company, I also serve on the adjudication panels of the SABS Design Achiever Awards and the South African Publication Forum. I guest lecture at the University of Pretoria, to the third and fourth year students and have evaluated student portfolios at the Open Window School of Visual Communication. I am a member of Mensa.

I am also a keen fly fisherman. Funnily enough, fly fishing and design share many similarities. Both involve a pursuit for perfection, both are finely tuned skills, practiced and improved upon over time, and both are always executed with passion. They are about thinking and then doing, about being in tune with one’s environment, whether they be natural, cultural, social, political or otherwise. They are interested in decoding those environments and coming up with a solution, whether it be to fool the wily fish, feeding naturally in its lie, or to communicate a message to an audience, clearly and succinctly. They are as demanding as they are rewarding, as frustrating as they are gratifying. Both are philosophies, both are fascinations, both are ways of living and of seeing the world around you.

I am a Pisces, which is quite apt, and have blue eyes, which are sometime red, from spending too much time behind my Mac. Be nice; practice catch-and-release.
